How we determine this score?
Every rating you see is the product of a two-step process that blends data
science with human clinical insight:
Comprehensive review sweep We
collect every publicly available patient review we can find—Google, Yelp,
Healthgrades, ZocDoc, Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, Reddit, forums, and more.
Duplicate or spam entries are filtered out, and each review is time-stamped
so that newer feedback carries more weight.
13-factor sentiment analysis + expert audit
A custom language-model pipeline scores each review across the 13 dimensions
patients care about most:
Friendliness | Professionalism | Responsiveness
| Accessibility | Clarity of Explanations | Willingness to Listen | Personalization of Treatment |
Billing Transparency | Value | Recurring Praise
| Recurring Complaints | Side-Effect Education | Diet/Nutrition Guidance
The algorithm converts raw language into numerical sentiment, flags
outliers, and spots consistent themes. Finally, a board-certified
clinician reviews the automated output to ensure medical-grade accuracy
and context.
The result is a single, easy-to-read satisfaction bar that reflects real
patient experience, not marketing copy. By combining transparent methodology,
physician oversight, and continuously updated data, we deliver a score you can
trust and that meets standards for authoritative health review content.

How we determine this?
Category
Description
Weight
Review Sentiment Quality
Tone and trust language in the most recent 10-20 reviews
25%
ActiveMed’s recent patient reviews are overwhelmingly positive in tone and content. In the last couple of years, nearly every reviewer gives a glowing 5-star account, praising the clinic’s compassionate care, effective treatments, and life-changing results. Many reviews use trust-building language, mentioning how honest the staff is (with no upselling of services) and how caring and personable the providers are. Patients frequently highlight specific practitioners by name (e.g. Dr. Matt Alavi, Dr. Brandy Brown) and share personal success stories, which adds credibility to the praise. There was only a single recent negative review amid dozens of positives – an outlier focusing on a front-desk issue rather than the care itself – so the overall sentiment remains strongly excellent.
Review Sentiment + Rating
Adjusted for inflation; not linear
10%
ActiveMed Encinitas has accumulated a high volume of reviews across platforms (roughly 150 in total), with an outstanding average rating around 4.9 out of 5. This combination of quantity and quality is exceptional for a local clinic. The large number of testimonials over the past two years provides a reliable sample, and the near-perfect aggregate rating indicates broad patient satisfaction. Adjusting for scale, this clinic’s review profile stands at the top tier – a very high volume of feedback that remains almost universally positive, which justifies a perfect score in this category.
MD-Led Practice
Is the clinic led by a visible MD or board-certified physician?
10%
The practice is not clearly MD-led, as its founder and clinical director (Matt Alavi) is a licensed acupuncturist rather than a medical doctor. The day-to-day leadership and brand identity center on integrative and alternative medicine expertise. That said, ActiveMed does have an MD (a board-certified internal medicine physician) on its practitioner team, which means there is some physician oversight in clinical care. While the inclusion of an MD adds credibility and medical guidance, the clinic is not primarily led by an MD or board-certified physician at the helm. We award partial credit here for having a physician on staff, but ActiveMed Encinitas doesn’t fully meet the ideal of a physician-directed practice.
Estimated Years in Business
Based on site language, domain age and review timeline
10%
ActiveMed Integrative Health Center has been operating for well over a decade – founded in 2009 – giving it approximately 15+ years in business. This long tenure is evident from the clinic’s established presence (multiple locations in Encinitas, Poway, and San Diego) and the timeline of patient reviews and testimonials spanning many years. Such longevity indicates a stable and experienced practice, with deep roots in the community. Given its substantial history and sustained operation, the clinic earns full marks for experience in this category.
Specialization in Hormone Therapy
Is hormone optimization a core offering or a secondary add-on?
10%
Hormone optimization is offered but not the singular focus of ActiveMed’s services. The clinic does provide hormone-related treatments – for example, Testosterone Replacement Therapy (TRT) for men and bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) for women are explicitly mentioned under its Men’s and Women’s Health services. They’ve even added modern metabolic therapies like semaglutide (a GLP-1 agonist) for weight loss, which often ties into hormone and metabolic optimization. However, these services are part of a very broad integrative care menu rather than the primary identity of the clinic. Hormone therapy does not appear to be ActiveMed’s exclusive specialty (unlike a dedicated hormone clinic), so while they are capable in this area, it’s one pillar among many. We score this moderately: they do specialize to a degree in hormone balancing, but it’s not their main or only niche.
Provider Relationship Model
Small, consistent provider model vs high-volume or anonymous feel
10%
Patients consistently report a personalized, one-on-one relationship with providers at ActiveMed. Reviews emphasize how the staff truly listens to patient concerns and tailors treatments individually. Many long-term patients describe seeing the same practitioner (or small team) over time and feeling genuinely cared for like family. There’s no sign of an impersonal, high-volume churn; instead, the clinic operates in a warm, attentive manner with continuity of care. The tone of feedback (e.g. “compassionate,” “takes the time to listen,” “I have always been made to feel comfortable”) indicates an excellent provider-patient relationship model. ActiveMed Encinitas appears to prioritize consistency and personalization in care, earning a top score here.
Unique Differentiators
TRT + HRT + GLP-1s + peptides = strong depth
10%
ActiveMed demonstrates several unique differentiators that set it apart from standard clinics. First, it offers a truly integrative care model – combining Eastern and Western modalities under one roof. Patients have access to acupuncture, naturopathic care, functional medicine, chiropractic/physical therapy, and conventional medicine input all in one center. This collaborative approach is relatively rare and provides a concierge-like comprehensiveness (though not a formal concierge membership program). Additionally, the clinic employs advanced therapies and technology: for example, they utilize an Axon electrical stimulation therapy device for pain management, perform regenerative treatments like PRP, and provide IV nutrient therapy and peptide treatments. Such a wide array of cutting-edge services (including some innovative tools not found in average clinics) is a strong differentiator. The only reason this isn’t a full 10 is that they don’t explicitly market a VIP concierge service or in-house lab imaging facility – however, in every other sense, ActiveMed offers distinctive, value-added care features well above a generic practice.

Negative Flags Penalty
Subtract 5-10% for patterns like billing issues, cold tone, rushed care
-10%
There are minimal negative flags for ActiveMed Encinitas, but not entirely none. The overwhelming majority of reviews report smooth, positive experiences with no complaints about billing, communication, or care quality. Importantly, patients often praise the honesty and professionalism of staff (suggesting transparent billing and respectful interactions are the norm). The only notable concern surfaced in one recent one-star review, where a patient’s family member complained about the attitude of “two ladies at the front desk.” This isolated incident described an unpleasant interaction at reception, which is a minor red flag regarding customer service. However, such feedback is exceedingly rare against a backdrop of uniformly happy patients. We therefore subtract a small penalty for that customer service grievance. Aside from that one-off issue, we found no patterns of red flags (no reports of unethical billing, excessively cold or rushed care, etc.). A 2/10 score here reflects a light penalty – essentially a single demerit point in an otherwise clean record.
Billing and Insurance
Billing
ActiveMed practices clear and transparent billing. Patients should contact the clinic directly for additional information about payment policies, methods accepted, and billing procedures.
Insurance

Patients should contact the clinic directly for detailed information about specific insurance plan acceptance, coverage questions, and patient responsibilities.
